Going on Vacation

Are you planning on going on vacation and leaving your home alone? If so, here are some tips to safeguard your home during your absence.

  • Don't leave a message on your answering machine announcing the fact that you are out of town.
  • Put any valuables such as cash, jewelry, important papers, etc. in a safe deposit box. Even include items such as credit cards (that you're not using) and checks.
  • Videotape your valuables and put that tape in the safe deposit box as well. This will give your insurance company documentation in the event of a fire or theft.
  • Put some lights on timers. This will give the appearance of someone being at home.
  • Stop mail and newspaper delivery. It's a dead giveaway that you are gone when there is mail overflowing in your mailbox or several newspapers are strewn across your front yard, porch or driveway. If you are expecting packages, notify the carrier to hold them until you return.
  • Make sure all of your locks and windows are secure. If you have an alarm system, make sure it's on.
  • Give a trusted friend or neighbor a spare key. Leave them your trip itinerary and phone numbers where you can be reached.
  • Arrange for a friend or neighbor to check your home daily.
  • Leave enough time prior to your departure to walk through your home and property to make sure that doors are locked, windows are closed, valuables are out of sight, keys and garage door openers are put away, ovens are off, etc. That last minute check will give you piece of mind and allow you to enjoy your vacation.
